Scarlett’s developed a habit lately of saying the words, “I can’t.”

“I can’t do it, Mama.”

“Mama, I can’t.”

It was a bit of a shock to my husband and me, who also noticed it, as she’s fiercely independent and wants to try to do everything herself. I kept trying to figure out where this phrase was coming from and why she was saying it.

Imagine my utter devastation when I realized she was getting it from me.

“Mama, I want to pour your coffee for you!”
“No, baby, you can’t.”
“Mama, I want to give this (food) to baby brother!”
“No, honey, you can’t.”
Sometimes it’s watching a tv show, or wanting to go outside when it’s raining, or wanting to climb on something that’s not meant to be climbed on, or opening a pretend bottle that isn’t made to be opened. But goodness, how heartbreaking it is to realize the word choice I use to stop these things was teaching my daughter to say “I can’t.” And instead of applying it to the situations I used it in, she was applying it to small tasks, like opening containers or putting diapers in stuffed animals or making objects out of blocks. Things that were slightly harder than normal, that would possibly make her frustrated if she had to persist.

It’s easy for me to say “you can’t.” It takes time and thought to compose a different response to whatever she’s asking or trying, one that’s more forgiving and explanatory, that eliminates negative language. But if my 2 year old has already mastered the phrase, “I can’t,” then I think that’s time much well spent.

All this to say, how we talk to our kids matters. Now excuse me while I go teach my daughter the importance of the word “yet.”

*Immediately climbs into the bed and snuggles up beside him to give him a kiss.*
Y’all, my two year old drives me crazy a lot of these days, but goodness does she melt my heart even more. She loves her baby brother, and at least so far (🤞🏼🤞🏼) she loves being a big sister! That’s made this transition so much easier- the patience she has when I’m nursing or her willingness to help grab things for him (read: his paci when it falls out 173628 times a day🙈). Here’s to some serious prayers that this relationship continues, because nothing fills this mamas heart up more than any bit of love she show’s him.

Took me like 3 weeks to share it, but a 2nd trimester bumpdate is up on the blog! 🤰🏼It was a doozy😅 but we’re that much closer to meeting baby boy🙌🏼! I actually had Scarlett 6 weeks exactly from where I am today. I feel like he’ll come later that she did, but what do I know? 😂😳 Might’ve started freaking out a little today at what all we need to do/buy/decide on by the time he gets here, but that’s the norm for this phase too, right? At least we have a name 😏☺️ #pregnancy #boymom #motherhood

Scarlett’s developed a habit lately of saying the words, “I can’t.”

“I can’t do it, Mama.”

“Mama, I can’t.”

Mamas, what’s your favorite thing about this quarantine period?
I feel like there are a lot of things I could so easily take for granted about this phase. I swear, it feels like Scarlett has grown more in the last month than she has yet! Devoting every day to just fostering her play and imagination does wonders to help her learn. The little conversations she has with her “friends” and the situations she dreams up.... I just love it! I love that I get to soak up this time of just her before baby brother comes. I also know that when this phase is over and the real world kicks back up, the first time I’m away from my girl, I’m going to have serious withdrawals 🙈! #mamasgirl

11 weeks (picture #1) doesn’t look that differen

11 weeks (picture #1) doesn’t look that different from 18 weeks, but goodness do I feel bigger😂. It took a little while to get up there, but I have a first trimester bumpdate up on the blog! 🤰🏼I love that I have all of Scarlett’s pregnancy documented and I don’t want to miss any of baby boys either! Although, it’s a good bit more challenging and I might want to block some of it out🙈 ... as I sit here at 18 weeks and still feel nauseous most nights 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also, I feel like this is 100% accurate of life with a toddler - mama trying to capture the bump while stickers are being placed ev-er-y-where😅🤦🏼‍♀️ #firsttrimester #11weeks #18weeks #bumpdate #pregnancy

We probably took close to 100 pictures (literally)

We probably took close to 100 pictures (literally) of Scarlett in the snow, with only about 4 that actually have her smiling 🤷🏼‍♀️. There are times she can be the happiest, most polite kid, and then there are times when she’s truly just a little frustrating and I feel at a loss for what to do. It’s so easy in either of the extremes to block out the rest - to think that she’s perfect in every way or to think that I’m struggling to raise a patient or open minded kid.
Tonight, after a pretty solid morning, Scarlett had a rough evening. In the midst of it, Brett mentioned off handedly that she’s almost 2, she’s just at that age. And that’s the truth of it - I can try to model and teach kindness and patience to her but she’s going to lose hers sometime just like I lose mine, be it that we’re 2 or 29. That doesn’t mean I’m a bad parent, and that most certainly doesn’t mean that my bighearted girl is a misbehaving kid. That just means that we’re human- and we’re going to have good days (or minutes or hours) and bad.
I love this child so much it hurts, her stubbornness and her sweet, sweet heart. My main job as her parent? To make sure she knows that, and to make sure she knows Jesus loves her even more.

Not gonna lie, it’s hard for me to believe we’re going to be welcoming a BOY to our family this year!! Crazy! But oh soo excited! Scarlett is going to be the best big sister and this little fella will be so very loved💕! And to get to raise him alongside his cousin🤰🏼🤰🏼... it’s just going to be great! #pregnancyannouncement #babyboys #cousins
